What Size Dehumidifier Do You Need? – UK guide

What Size Dehumidifier?

Are you looking to buy a dehumidifier but you don’t know what size dehumidifier you should buy? Look no further. We spent a lot of time researching exactly what size dehumidifier you should buy for different types of house. Manufacturers often don’t give you a recommendation on what sized room the dehumidifier is suited for. That’s why we decided to do a lot of research and testing to answer the question for you.

Figuring out what size dehumidifier you need can be a bit confusing. You wouldn’t buy a big dehumidifier for a tiny room would you? You also wouldn’t buy a tiny dehumidifier for a big room and expect results? The size of dehumidifier you need can vary depending on the size of the room and what it is used for. For example, a bathroom is going to be more humid than a living room isn’t it? For your convenience, we put together a handy dehumidifier size guide that you can use.

Quick Dehumidifier Size Guide

Check out this table which tells you what size dehumidifier you need. It also gives you an example of which type of dehumidifier matches the size criteria. We only recommend dehumidifiers that we have used and highly rated.

What Size Dehumidifier for a small room

People are increasingly looking to put dehumidifiers in small rooms as mini dehumidifiers increase in popularity. We class a small room as a small single bedroom or smaller, including storage cupboards etc. We think for a small room the best sized dehumidifier would be a moisture absorber such as the Unibond Aero 360 or a mini dehumidifier such as the Auzkin 600ml. The Auzkin will offer more water extraction depending on how severe the moisture issue is. It is worth noting that the Unibond Aero 360 has the advantage of being silent and not consuming electricity.

What Size Dehumidifier for a Bedroom

Lots of people choose to use dehumidifiers in their bedroom, me included. They are a great way of preventing condensation on walls and windows and keeping the air nice and dry. For an average sized bedroom we would recommend either a 1500ml Pro Breeze dehumidifier for mild cases of damp or a 10L Meaco ABC Range. The Meaco is the better choice if you have bad damp problems in your bedroom because it has a much higher water extraction rate. It is also extremely quiet for a 10L dehumidifier and incredibly energy efficient. The Pro Breeze 1500ml is ideal for mild damp problems and offers more power than most other mini dehumidifiers.

What Size Dehumidifier for a 2 bed house

If you have damp problems in a 2 bed house, then you are going to want to get something more powerful. you might only need the dehumidifier to solve a damp issue in one particular room. Does this include you? then refer to our above guidance. If you are looking to keep your whole house dry and never have to deal with damp or mould, then look no further than a 12-20L dehumidifier. The obvious choices for these categories are the Meaco 12L ABC range or the Meaco 20L platinum range. Meaco produces outstanding dehumidifiers and these are two of the flagship models. Both are incredibly quiet and extremely energy efficient. They might cost a little bit more than cheaper dehumidifiers, but they will save you money in the long run by being much more efficient. If you have a mild damp issue then go with the 12L Meaco ABC but if you really want to make sure your home stays dry, trust us and go for the 20L Meaco, its won plenty of awards and is a proven option.

What Size Dehumidifier for a 3 bed house

The same applies here as the 2 bed house. Generally though, 3 bedroom houses are a little bit bigger so if you want to make sure your home stays dry then go with the 20L Meaco Platinum. If you are looking to dehumidify one or two rooms then you can still go for the Meaco ABC 10L or 12L. We would recommend that you go with the Meaco 20L most of the time because a 3 bed home is more likely to generate more moisture than a 2 bed. More bedrooms = more people = more moisture.

What Size Dehumidifier for a big house (4+ beds)

If you want to keep a 4+ bed house nice and dry and avoid dampness, you’re going to need a larger dehumidifier. If you only have a mild damp issue and just want to make sure you don’t get damp related issues, then we once again recommend the Meaco 20L Platinum range. For more severe damp issues however, you need to call in the big guns. This is where the Newentor 25L comes in. The Newentor 25L is considered to be one of the best and most reliable 25L dehumidifiers on the market today. The reason it has won awards is because it is one of the most energy efficient and quiet 25L dehumidifiers you will find. It might cost a bit more up front, but a cheaper model will cost you more in the long run by putting up your energy bills.

What Size Dehumidifier for a mobile home

There is a debate in the mobile home/caravan community on whether dehumidifiers are worth it. We have covered this previously here and we believe they are. Frequent use followed by storage is going to result in trapped moisture which could damage paint and upholstery. One of the most surefire ways to avoid this is by using a moisture absorber or a dehumidifier. Generally, we would recommend a moisture absorber such as the Ansio interior dehumidifier or the Unibond Aero 360 for light use. These will do a good job of soaking up any leftover moisture whilst in storage. For people who use their mobile homes or caravans a lot though, we recommend that you use a regular electric dehumidifier.

The best budget dehumidifier for a mobile home or caravan would be the Pro Breeze 1500ml. It won’t break the bank and it will do a decent job of taking moisture out of the air. For people who don’t mind spending a little bit more to keep their mobile home or caravan dry, we recommend the Meaco ABC range 10L. This will absolutely keep your mobile home dry during heavy use.

Why it’s important to choose the right size dehumidifier

Choosing the right size dehumidifier is important for several reasons. Firstly, choosing the right size means that you will be more happy with your purchase and more likely to solve your problems. You will be sorely disappointed if you buy a dehumidifier that is too small to prevent damp and mould growth in your house. Choosing the right size avoids this issue by giving you the information you need to get the right size straight away. Choosing the right size also stops you from accidentally wasting money on a dehumidifier you didn’t need. You don’t need a really expensive unit to solve a little damp issue in a bedroom for example, a smaller unit will usually suffice.

How Many Dehumidifiers do I Need for my House?

The number of dehumidifiers you need for your house depends on several factors including the size of your house, the level of humidity, and the performance of the dehumidifier(s) you are considering. Each dehumidifier is rated for a certain capacity and coverage area, usually expressed in terms of square footage or square meters and liters or pints of moisture removed per day.

Here’s how you can estimate the number of dehumidifiers you might need:

  1. Assess the Area:
    • Measure the square footage (or square meters) of the areas with excess humidity. Remember to consider multiple floors and basements.
  2. Determine the Level of Humidity:
    • If the area is damp but not wet (60-70% relative humidity), opt for a dehumidifier that can handle the square footage of your space.
    • For very damp, wet, or moldy spaces (above 70% relative humidity), you may need a dehumidifier with a capacity for a larger area than your actual square footage to effectively reduce the humidity.
  3. Check Dehumidifier Capacity:
    • Dehumidifiers come in various capacities, typically ranging from about 10 to 70 pints (4.7 to 33 liters) of moisture removed per day. Larger capacity dehumidifiers can handle larger areas or higher humidity levels.
  4. Consider Room Types:
    • Bathrooms, basements, and laundry rooms may need more dehumidification than other areas of the house. You may need a separate dehumidifier for such spaces.
  5. Placement:
    • Place dehumidifiers in areas where humidity is a problem, ensuring they are not obstructed to allow for proper air circulation.

Example Calculation:

If you have a 2,000 square foot house (about 186 square meters) with moderate humidity, a single large-capacity dehumidifier (rated for up to 2,500 square feet or about 232 square meters) might be sufficient. However, if your basement is very damp, you might need a separate dehumidifier for that area. Similarly, if you have a large, open living area, one dehumidifier may be enough, while a house with many separate rooms or floors may require more than one unit.

Recommendations:

  1. Consult the Manufacturer’s Guidelines:
    • Check the manufacturer’s specifications for each dehumidifier model to understand its capacity and coverage area.
  2. Start with One:
    • If unsure, start with one dehumidifier and assess its effectiveness before purchasing additional units.
  3. Professional Assessment:
    • Consider having a professional assess your home for humidity problems and recommend appropriate solutions.

Remember that proper ventilation, insulation, and sealing of windows and doors are also crucial in managing humidity levels in your home.
